Gerard James Ross
An 11-year-old boy on a seaside holiday vanishes without a trace, his body discovered weeks later in a remote pine forest, sparking a decades-long hunt for a brutal killer who left behind few clues.
Gerard James Ross, an 11-year-old boy from Newman, was on a family holiday in the coastal town of Rockingham, Western Australia, in October 1997. On the morning of October 14, Gerard and his brother left their Kent Street accommodation to walk to a nearby comic book shop. His brother, who was on rollerblades, went ahead, with the pair planning to meet at the store. Gerard was last seen walking along Kent Street, just a short distance from where his family was staying. He never arrived at the shop, and a massive search was soon underway.
The initial search involved police and SES volunteers scouring beaches and bushland around Rockingham. As days turned into a week with no sign of Gerard, the search intensified, with police fearing the worst – that he had been abducted. The investigation expanded to include checks on known sex offenders in the area and the crew of ships docked at the nearby naval base. The grim discovery was made two weeks after his disappearance, on October 28, 1997. A man exercising his horse found Gerard's fully clothed body in the Karnup Pine Plantation, about 20 kilometres from where he was last seen.
The homicide investigation that followed revealed the brutal nature of Gerard's murder, though the exact cause of death was not publicly released. Police described it as a "crime of opportunity" and believed the killer acted in haste. Key pieces of evidence and witness accounts have emerged over the years, including the sighting of a white ute in the area around the time of the abduction, and a woman who came forward months later stating she saw two men struggling with a young boy. Forensic evidence also pointed to the possible involvement of a dog, as hairs were found on Gerard's clothing. The blue 'Yankees' baseball cap Gerard was wearing on the day he disappeared has never been found.
Despite a long and extensive investigation, no one has ever been charged with Gerard's murder. In 1998, the Western Australian Government offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. This was increased to a historic $1 million in 2020, on the 23rd anniversary of his abduction. Police have revealed they have several persons of interest, and continue to appeal to the public for any information that may finally bring justice for Gerard Ross and his family.
