Tina Greer

Tina Greer

Beechmont, Queensland
18 January 2012
Overview

Tina Louise Greer was a 32-year-old mother who disappeared from the Gold Coast hinterland on 18 January 2012. She was last seen heading to the property of her ex-boyfriend, Leslie "Grumpy" Sharman, a well-known member of the Finks motorcycle gang. Her body has never been found.

A coronial inquest in December 2023 found that Tina was murdered "most likely violently" by Sharman. The coroner, Kerrie O'Callaghan, determined that Tina died on or about 18 January 2012 at Clumber, Queensland, and that Sharman was responsible for her death and concealed her body.

Tina had been the victim of domestic violence at the hands of Sharman throughout his relationship. She had told friends she feared for her life, stating "if you don't hear from me, I'll probably be six feet under." Despite multiple reports of domestic violence to police, officers failed to adequately investigate or protect her.

Sharman died in a car accident in 2018 and was never charged with Tina's murder. The inquest was initiated after Tina's daughter, Lili, petitioned for answers, supported by over 20,000 signatures.

Full Description

Background

Tina Louise Greer was born on 26 January 1979 in Queensland, the eldest daughter of Phillip and Margaret Greer. She had three brothers: Adam, Peter, and Matthew. When Tina was 17, her mother Margaret passed away, which led to Tina developing substance abuse issues as a coping mechanism.

Tina's daughter, Lili, was born in July 1998. Despite her struggles with addiction, Tina maintained a close relationship with Lili, even when Lili was placed in the care of her grandparents, Phillip and Rosemary Greer. The two would communicate secretly via phone and letters, and Tina's goal was always to be reunited with her daughter.

Relationship with Leslie Sharman

In 2008, Tina met Leslie "Grumpy" Sharman, a well-known member of the Finks motorcycle gang who was 26 years her senior. Sharman worked as a cleaner and tip truck driver and lived on an acreage property on Spicers Gap Road, Clumber, near Boonah.

The relationship was marked by severe domestic violence. Tina confided in friends that Sharman had:

  • Hit her in the head with a barstool
  • Punched her in the face and left her in a car park
  • Held a gun to her head
  • Driven his ute at her, prompting her to tell witnesses "He's going to kill me"

Despite the abuse, Tina was financially and emotionally dependent on Sharman. She attempted to leave him multiple times, entering rehabilitation at the Salvation Army's Fairhaven facility on several occasions.

Final Days

In December 2011, Tina and Lili moved into a granny flat on Brushbox Road, Lower Beechmont. Tina told Child Safety officers on 16 December 2011 that she had broken up with Sharman and wanted to focus on her life with Lili.

On 14 January 2012, Tina left a voicemail for a friend saying she sounded happy and had her own place with Lili. On 16 January, she told her friend Lina Williams that she and Sharman "were over" and he was going to let her get on with her life.

The Day of Disappearance - 18 January 2012

On Wednesday 18 January 2012, Tina met Lina Williams and their daughters at Canungra at 11am. They drove to the girls' high school to buy school uniforms, then to Westfield at Helensvale for school shoes. They returned to Canungra at about 2:30pm.

Lili was to sleep over at the Williams' house that night. Tina said she was going to Sharman's property to do some washing and use his tools to repair paint damage on her car. She promised to pick up Lili the following afternoon.

Tina never arrived to collect Lili. She did not respond to text messages or calls. By Friday 20 January, her phone stopped working. On Saturday 21 January, Lina Williams reported Tina missing.

Discovery of Evidence

Tina's car was found at Governors Chair Lookout at the end of Spicers Gap Road, near Sharman's property. Her handbag was open on the front seat with her wallet visible inside.

Investigation

The Queensland Police Service treated Tina's disappearance as a homicide from the outset. The investigation included:

  • Coercive hearings by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) in 2012
  • A further investigation in 2018
  • A reward offering
  • Additional coercive hearings in 2020

Despite the extensive investigation, Sharman was never charged. He died in a car accident in 2018.

Coronial Findings

On 21 December 2023, Brisbane Coroner Kerrie O'Callaghan delivered findings following an inquest held from 13-22 September 2023. The coroner found:

  1. Identity: Tina Louise Greer
  2. Date of Death: On or about 18 January 2012
  3. Place of Death: Clumber, Queensland
  4. Cause of Death: Tina was murdered, most likely violently
  5. Responsibility: Leslie Sharman was involved in or caused Tina's death and concealed evidence of his involvement and her body

The inquest also found that the Queensland Police Service's response to domestic violence allegations against Sharman was inadequate. Officers at Boonah police station failed to properly investigate multiple reports of violence.

Legacy

The inquest was made possible by Tina's daughter Lili, who petitioned for answers about her mother's death. Her petition gathered over 20,000 signatures and was supported by the then Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence.

The case highlights systemic failures in the police response to domestic violence and has contributed to ongoing discussions about protecting victims of family violence in Queensland.
