Gwenneth Graham
A mother-of-two's night out at a local pub ends in her brutal murder, her body dumped in bushland, leaving a half-century mystery and a million-dollar question: who killed Gwenneth Graham?
Gwenneth Graham, a 46-year-old mother of two, was a woman with a vibrant and somewhat unconventional life. Born Gwenneth Murray in May 1928, she had a history of being on the move, having lived in various suburbs of Perth and even the regional town of Geraldton. She had been married three times, with her eldest son, Steven, from her first marriage. In 1974, she was living in Balga with her third husband, Tom, in a state housing property they planned to buy. Their relationship was described as open, and Gwenneth would often frequent local pubs and sometimes disappear for short periods. Despite this, she was remembered by her son as a loving, warm, funny, and charming mother who kept a very clean house and was a good cook.
On the night of Friday, September 27, 1974, Gwenneth and her husband went to separate pubs. She went to the Malthouse Tavern in Balga, a relatively new establishment where she wasn't well known. She was last seen leaving the tavern at around 11:15 pm. When she didn't return home, her husband was initially unconcerned due to her habit of going off for a few days. However, after four days with no contact, he reported her missing to the police on October 1, 1974. A note with the name "Blondie" was found pinned to the door of her home, a nickname from a previous husband, suggesting she may have been with someone she knew from her past.
The grim discovery of Gwenneth's body was made on the morning of Sunday, October 6, 1974. Two young boys found her concealed under an old refrigerator in a bush area in Balga, surrounded by Balga Avenue, Heyshot Road, Climping Street, and Walderton Avenue. Near her body, police found some money and a packet of cigarettes. Earlier, on October 2, a pair of her shoes had been found on the side of Redcliffe Avenue, about a 10-minute walk from the tavern. If the person who found them had looked further, they would have also discovered her underclothes and a white handbag.
The investigation into Gwenneth Graham's murder was extensive, involving the canvassing of 4000 people and the inspection of hundreds of cars. Dozens of people were interviewed as persons of interest, but no one has ever been charged. The case went cold for many years. In February 2024, a $1 million reward was offered for information leading to a conviction, reigniting hopes for solving this half-century-old mystery. Police believe someone in the community holds the key to what happened to Gwenneth Graham and are urging them to come forward to bring closure to her family.
